Wu Wear is the official clothing line of the Wu-Tang Clan. It launched in 1995 in Staten Island, New York, and was one of the first fashion labels owned and run by a hip-hop group: Wu-Tang clothes made by Wu-Tang, not licensed out to someone else.
The original Wu-Tang clothing line
In the mid-'90s the Clan was building an empire on its own terms, and Wu Wear grew out of the same idea. Started with the group's longtime business partner Oliver "Power" Grant, the brand opened its first store in Staten Island and was soon stocked in shops across the country. The W logo went from album covers to hoodies, tees and outerwear worn far beyond the group's own fans. The Clan even gave it a song: "Wu-Wear: The Garment Renaissance" (1996).
